Creative Studio
+ Out of Paper

I connected with Emily Juniper of “Utter” & Press a few years ago, after sharing some of my photographs of the books she designed and published for British comedian and poet, Tim Key. When she suddenly asked me to collaborate on a project, I said yes before I’d even finished reading the question.
The pair of works we created for Out of Paper explore the idea of joints, connections made purely from paper, one was made in Emily’s studio in Cornwall and the other in mine here in Kyoto.
We pre-determined a quartet of joints, using simple Japanese cutting techniques, but left the choice and combinations of paper as the single, creative variable within those fixed constraints.
Each of us exchanged a parcel of our most treasured, miscellaneous papers to the other. It was these that became the works, a Japanese paper joined with an English paper, four times, in each of our respective studios.
The works are always to be presented together, an original with a print of its counterpart.
Out of Paper is an exhibition at the Falmouth Art Gallery, in collaboration with Illustration and the Paper Artefact, Paper Artist Collective and Falmouth University.
