+ Crafting Culture

In the narrow streets of Kyoto, skilled artisans quietly repeat techniques passed through generations. Some traditions remain untouched. My 92-year-old neighbour has spent a lifetime turning massive wooden rings for shrines and sumo tournaments, each one exactly like the last, all from a modest metal shed.
On the other hand, throughout the city modern makers twist time-honoured methods and materials to meet the aesthetics of contemporary life, with preservation and innovation unfolding side by side. This ongoing photo series combines professional assignments with personal connections, and is hopefully just the beginning of a deeper exploration, documenting Kyoto’s evolving craft culture.
