Living in Kyoto, I frequently wander through temples and shrines, letting the quiet spaces offer a sense of calm that I hope to weave into my daily life. Occasionally, opportunities arise to go deeper; to be guided through these places by monks and priests, and to hear them speak about their beliefs, routines and reflections.

 

These conversations have led to thoughtful questions and lighthearted moments alike. I hope that over time, I can get to know more about the people behind the rituals; their discipline, and quiet warmth. This ongoing photo series is a glimpse into some of those encounters, shaped by simple observation, and grounded in an interest to understand how spiritual life continues to evolve in Japan today.
